Conservation Management Plans

Conservation Plans were first introduced into the UK from Australia where they had become the normal way of managing large sites of cultural importance. They were quickly assimilated into the UK in the 1990s, promoted by English Heritage as best practice for managing heritage sites.

Conservation Management Plans (CMP) are useful for any organisation caring for the historic environment. They are most commonly associated with applications for Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grants. A Conservation Management Plan must be provided if you are applying for an HLF grant of more than £1 million for a project involving capital works, or if you are applying for less than £1 million but your project involves conserving several kinds of heritage.
