Brassington Conservation Area Appraisal

Brassington is a picturesque village on the edge of the Peak District. It grew in association with its ancient industry of lead mining, intertwined with a pattern of small-scale farming. The appraisal revealed a large number of buildings with a 17th century core and a fascinating evolution. The boundary of the conservation area was extended to include several 17th century buildings discovered during the course of the appraisal.

The appraisal recognised in particular the importance of the historic landscape setting. The village has one of the best preserved examples in Derbyshire of the medieval “croft and toft” landscape, with smallholding crofts still preserved as narrow fields divided by drystone boundary walls.
