About Mel Morris

Mel Morris has over 21 years experience of working in historic environment conservation, 15 of which were as a conservation officer for large local authorities. Working for multi-disciplinary conservation teams has brought Mel into contact with a wide range of professions and heritage organisations. She is particularly experienced in working with historic buildings, conservation areas, industrial archaeology and museums located within historic buildings.

Since establishing the consultancy, the range of work has included 34 Conservation Area Appraisals and several Conservation Management Plans for complex historic sites, working with architects, archaeologists, ecologists, interpreters and landscape designers, as well as a number of challenging planning & listed building consent applications for private clients.

“I believe passionately in making conservation & our heritage accessible and understandable to all. I ensure that documents avoid jargon and use plain English. Where appropriate, I use expressive language as this can bring documents to life - in the case of conservation areas, it helps to convey meaning and distinguish the special, local identity & sense of place.

With my background in local government, I can appreciate the pressures & driving forces facing local authorities & this can be very helpful to our local authority clients, as we meet and regularly exceed their expectations. I work closely with local conservation officers and English Heritage advisers to achieve the best possible outcomes.”
